Here is a summary of the study: Explore the most popular sermon ever delivered! What must it have been like to hear Jesus deliver the Sermon on the Mount? What did his words mean to people in the crowd? How did it change their lives? What do his words mean to us today and how do they change our lives? Did his listeners interpret the sermon as we do now? Dr. Amy-Jill Levine explores the major topics in the most popular sermon ever delivered, providing historical and theological context and using a solid knowledge of Hebrew Scriptures and moral teachings.
Counterfeit Christianity by Roger Olson
Please join Pastor Randy for a study on “Counterfeit Christianity” by Roger Olson: Distorted Christian teachings threaten effective and thoughtful faith. Heresies are not limited to times of long ago. True, major heretical controversies originated ages ago, but many of these same errors and myths continue to circulate through congregations of today.
The study will take place the week of September 7 through the week of November 9 (10 weeks) at 6:00 pm in the Epworth Building gym. Cost of the book is $17.
Please call the church office or email Linda McGrath at [email protected] no later than Wednesday, September 2, if you are interested in the class.
The Class Meeting by Kevin Watson
“The Class Meeting” by Kevin Watson is an eight chapter book discussing the history and theology of the original class meetings created by Methodism’s founder John Wesley. Persons who wished to attend worship services with Mr Wesley were required to participate in a “class meeting” during the week before Sunday worship.
It is through these class meetings that Methodism grew and flourished during Wesley’s time. This book takes us through the basics of what transpires during a class meeting and then gives a “roadmap” for setting up these small group gatherings in our church today. As Bishop Robert Hayes states, “If you are one of those Christians seeking to experience the height, depth, length, width and breadth of God’s purpose and meaning for your life, you need to know that you can discover it in a place we’ve yet to look – the class meeting !”
This class will be presented in eight weekly sessions, on-line using Zoom and lead by Dick Strachan an experience presenter of this course. We will select a day of the week and a time most convenient to class members. Please let Linda McGrath in the church office know of your interest and when the classes would be most convenient for you. Please call or email Dick Strachan ([email protected]) if you wish more information. The Class Meeting is widely known and supported by United Methodist churches and groups across the country..
